Learn MoreDuring the time of European colonization, Bethesda was situated in an area inhabited by the Piscataway and Nacotchtank tribes. Henry Fleet, a fur trader, was the first European to visit the area by sailing up the Potomac River and stayed with the Piscataway tribe from 1623 to 1627. He later secured funding for another expedition to the region and was granted proprietary rights to 2,000 acres of land, becoming a member of Maryland’s colonial legislature. The Maryland division of Rangers was created in 1694 to patrol the frontier due to raids from the Senecas and Susquehannock.
Most settlers in colonial Maryland were tenant farmers who paid their rent in tobacco, and Bethesda’s first land grant was surveyed by Henry Darnall in 1694, which covered 710 acres. Tobacco farming was the primary way of life in Bethesda throughout the 1700s, and it became a supply region for the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War. The establishment of Washington, D.C. in 1790 deprived Montgomery County of its economic center at Georgetown, but had little effect on small farmers in Bethesda.
From 1805 to 1821, Bethesda became a rural way station due to the Washington and Rockville Turnpike’s development, which carried tobacco and other products between Georgetown and Rockville, and north to Frederick. A small settlement grew around a store and tollhouse along the turnpike, known as “Darcy’s Store,” and was renamed Bethesda in 1871 after the Bethesda Meeting House, a Presbyterian church built in 1820. Bethesda remained a small crossroads village through the 19th century, consisting of a blacksmith shop, a church and school, and a few houses and stores.
In 1852, a post office was established in Bethesda, and a streetcar line was introduced in 1890, leading to suburbanization and increased population growth in the early 1900s. Bethesda planners anticipated the transportation revolution and became a key stopping point for the B & O railroad on their Georgetown Branch line, completed around 1910, which ran from Silver Spring to Georgetown and passed through Bethesda. The branch had a storage yard and multiple sidings that served the industries in Bethesda in the early 20th century. The tracks were removed in 1994, and the first part of the trail was opened in 1998, which has become the most used rail-trail in the United States, averaging over one million users per year.
